The first New Spirit Ju Jitsu Tournament was held at 12:00 on Sunday 14th May
2000 at Pilsley Miners Welfare. The event was extremely well attended, and a great time was had by all.
The first four in each class received a certificate, with the top three also
receiving medals. The winners will be presented with trophies later in the year,
at the Christmas Party and Presentation.
All the competitors preformed impeccably, the event seemed to spur them on to
greater performances, and we had some really exciting matches.
The ground fighting and sparring matches were refereed by various
combinations of Ged Ramsdale, Nigel Goodwin, and David Kacperski, with
myself and Ged dropping out when our own children were involved. A panel of
three judges scored the Ju Jitsu event, and also decided the outcome of any
drawn bouts. The judges were Bob Cope, Sheila Turner, and Gordon Marshall.

Performed by David Kacperski 3rd
Dan (Karate), and Ged Ramsdale 2nd Dan (Ju Jitsu).
To
give a break partway through the tournament, Dave and Ged performed a short Karate demonstration, which amazed the
audience with the height and power of Dave's kicking. He ended with one of his
Kata routines, which showed the watchers another of the major differences
between Karate and Ju Jitsu.
After
the tournament had finished, a number of us gathered at The Coach House, for an
excellent Sunday lunch - followed by a few beers :-). We all had a really great
meal, and some of us had a few more beers than were good for us!.
The success of the tournament
was such that it has already been decided to make it an annual event, and I look
forward to attending again next year!.
